Ants belong to the same family as wasps and bees and they belong in a colony which can be home to millions of insects. There are a number of different roles for ants within a colony. Within a colony there are; workers, soldiers, drones and the queen. The ants gather food for the colony and the queen.
Earwigs are usually from 10mm-25mm long that have pincers at the back of the body and antennas at the front, they are a dark brown colour. Earwigs have been known to be transported indoors by flowers that have been cut from the garden. They can also get into the house by windows and sometimes move around in large numbers. The adult earwigs are nocturnal. Earwigs are more or less harmless with only a possible slight nip from there pincers but if they get into the house then they are still a pest.
Silverfish are a silvery grey coloured insect that are usually around 12mm in length. They are a wingless insect that is cigar/torpedo shaped. They have three long bristles on the end of their tail and have two antennas at the front of their head. They are commonly found in dark damp areas of a house such as the bathroom and the kitchen. They are most active in the dark and can run quickly, they feed on food debris and starches such as wallpaper pastes. They can become a pest in the kitchen area and is best to get them treated if you find some in the home, the main cause for silverfish is dampness.
Spiders can be a difficult pest in the home as they reside in small warm places within the home. The majority of spiders in the UK are harmless but they are not nice to look at. In the UK the most common spiders are; common house spider, wolf spider, sac spider and the cellar spider. There are a number of ways to try and reduce spider infestation such as regular cleaning and vacuuming, removing any webs that you may see, if you have holes or cracks in your walls then fill them in and by having good lighting in the home then this will stop potential spider prey from entering the home.
